The knee is a relatively stable joint, however torn ligament particularity the anterior cruciate ligament [ACL] can happen instantly destabilizing the knee and be very painful.
Women are more prone to ACL tear than men, some reason are young men often develop bigger gluteus and hamstring muscle while young women tends to be more front dominant and develop more in their quadriceps and less gluteus and hamstrings.
There are some steps you can take to improve the stability of your knees, by strengthen the major muscles that surround the joints. Some of these muscles are the gluteus, hamstring, quadriceps, iliotibial band and most importantly the muscles of the hip.
It is also important to wear proper foot wear that do not cause excessive prolong internal and external rotational of the ankles.
